HXH Alumni commemorative projectsNuns and Nightingales Commemorative Statue
In 2007, the Alumni launched a project to both honour the memory of the Holy Cross Hospital, the founding Sisters, and all the graduates who entered its hallowed halls to begin their nursing careers.
This commemoration project was commissioned to sculptor Don Begg and his wife Shirley of Studio West in Cochrane. The Beggs’ attention to detail can be seen right down to researching the precise pattern and stitching in the nuns’ habits and the specific way their shoes had to be laced.
The unveiling was on September 25, 2011. The statue was installed in the 1929 wing of the hospital, designated a Municipal Historical Resource, ensuring its permanence in the community.
Thank you to the encouragement and financial support of our fellow Graduates, Allan Markin, the Sisters of Charity (Grey Nuns) fellow graduates, family, friends and generous businessmen “Nuns and Nightingales” is standing proudly as a reminder of the past. An Endowment has been set up in perpetuity by Bob and Nola Rintoul for the maintenance of the Bronze.
HXH School of Nursing Display Cabinets
The alumni maintain display cabinets at both the University of Calgary and Rockyview General Hospital. The cabinets include information and commemorative pins, uniforms and are a visual testament to the School’s contributions to our community.
